June Newsletter

Kim and some little Quechua girls

I am not my own, nor would I choose for myself.  Let God employ me where He thinks fit.
William Carey (Missionary to India 1790)

Again, much has happened this past month.  The closer we get to leaving the busier we are.  We did hear from the language school in Costa Rica and should be hearing from someone to help us find a house to rent soon.
The leftist, former army officer, Ollanta Humala won the Peru presidency.  Our plans have not changed and we press forward trusting in our sovereign God who appoints leaders for His purposes.
So people are asking if our full reliance on God for support worked?  Did God raise up the individuals and churches that He has already ordained from the foundation of the world?  He has certainly did and He has done it in such a powerful way that will glorify His name so mightily.

Walter and Evita, our Peruvian partners

Here is how he did it.  We only can comprehend a little of how this all worked behind the scenes but this is what we know.  Some people that volunteered to support us decided not to while others who we never knew existed did so abundantly.  God raised up many individuals and some churches to hold the rope for us.  Many people have told us testimonies of how God answered their prayers to support us in mighty ways.  Support has also come in from people we would have never guessed would support us and from people we do not know and from completely anonymous people.  When we announced that we were going to be missionaries, I never knew very many churches, but God, by His perfect providence, raised up churches that were put in our path that we built a great relationship with and that decided to partner with us in Peru.  Jordan Hall from Fellowship Baptist Church in Sidney, MT, our biggest financial supporter came up with the idea to turn the basement of the church into a boarding house for the oil field workers and charge them rent.  The church voted to give a part of this rent to us for our personal support and for the support of the two churches that we will start, God willing, in Peru.  All the glory and credit can only go to God.

The in-laws came for a looting and pillaging weekend and took a large amount of stuff home with them.  They took everything that wasn’t nailed down, even our yellow lab.  It was sad to say goodbye to such a great dog that has been with us for the last 9 years.  It was a great joy being with family and we are realizing how difficult it will be to leave them.  But Jesus is worth it.
Abundant Grace church in Big Timber continues to glorify God and develop a greater passion for missions.  They gave me such a great tool called the Puritan Hard Drive which is filled with 12,500 Puritan and Reformation books and resources.

Our faithful Yellow Lab, Sage

We were put in contact with the people in Costa Rica who will help us find a house to rent.  They are current students that will be our “big brother” and help us transition and get settled in when we arrive in Costa Rica.  We had a great talk and they gave us some good advice.  It looks like most of the house we can rent have a fair amount of cockroaches and rats but this is a small price to pay.  I look forward to running a rat trap-line.  We found out that we will arrive in the rainy season, which last for at least 3 months and it rains pretty much continually.  We will have to walk everywhere we want to go, which I’m looking forward to.  The Killillay’s are also in progress of renting a house as well and everything is progressing well.
I have finished my job and am now unemployed in the world and full time employed to God.  I am so thankful to God for giving me a great job and my family such a great place to live for a season.  We will miss this place but we are looking forward to the new season in our lives that God is graciously giving us.
Our visa paper work is all in order and everything that we can do in the United States is complete.  Please continue to pray that we will be able to obtain visas in both Costa Rica and Peru.
We will be very busy in July preaching and sharing the gospel around Montana and I’m am zealously looking forward to it.
Y mi Dios proveerá a todas sus necesidades, conforme a sus riquezas en gloria en Cristo Jesús.  - Philip. 4:19

Did the early missionaries depend upon the support of money to go preach and proclaim the True Gospel?

No they didn't, they depended upon God.

So where is your faith in God to provide for your needs.

We do not rely on the support of money to share the gospel in Peru. God, Himself, has brought us together with some really wonderful churches and people who are supporting us. God put these people in our path. We would never have crossed paths otherwise. God's hand is all over this, in every way possible. We don't know how all of our needs will be met. He has given us what we need for today. We wait to see how he will provide tomorrow. That's where our faith in God comes in.

Hmmmmmm...let me open up God's Word. Yes, there it is. Philippians 4:15-16 and Paul thanking the Philippian Church for SUPPORTING HIM! Ooops!! Sorry "anonymous." And I think Paul was a man who depended on God too. Uh-oh, here's another one. 2 Corinthians 11:8-9 where Paul says he robbed other churches so the Corinthian church wouldn't be burdened. Oh shoot...what are we going to do with Paul? Now he's robbing people to go on mission trips. Well Scott I am thankful you aren't robbing anyone and I gladly support you like the Philippian Church supported Paul and that support is viewed by God Almighty as a partnership in the Gospel of Jesus Christ and that partnership of giving and receiving is a sweet-smelling sacrifice to the Lord (Phil. 4:18). Hey "anonymous" come over to Calvary Baptist tomorrow where we will be talking about Pharisees who criticize the advancement of the Gospel.

Thanks for your concern (anonymous). I think Mike said all that needs to be said to destroy your very bad understanding of Scripture. If God never removed the many obstacles and opened all the doors of support for us (without us asking) then we could never go. It is good to get encouragement from "christians" like you as we leave all behind but a couple suitcases to go preach the biblical gospel in Peru for the rest of our lives. Keep up your work of criticizing as we press on in the advancement of the kingdom of Christ

Scott Doherty is an ordained Elder in the church, I know as I had the privilege of sitting on his ordination council. By the Biblical standards of 1 Timothy and Titus he is a qualified man.
This ministry that he takes to Peru is an extension, the very living out of the eldership to which he has been called. The ministry for which God has chosen him is that of an overseer fulfilling 2 Timothy 2:1-2 which reads “You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.” As such he comes under the mandate for financial provision and respect given in 1 Timothy 5:17-18, which says: “Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching. For the Scripture says, “You shall not muzzle an ox when it treads out the grain,” and, “The laborer deserves his wages.”
Whoever anonymous is should perhaps heed the warning in v.19 “Do not admit a charge against an elder except on the evidence of two or three witnesses.” Inherent in that admonition is that the witnesses must be credible!
There are many other passages one could point to in demonstrating the Biblical veracity of financial support of those who preach the gospel. Mike has done a good job with a few of them (and a little spark of sarcasm). We shall leave the remainder to the ministering of the Holy Spirit of God. Please read your Bible with a prayerful diligence before you take up your pen or your keyboard my friend.

Scott and Kim,
just remember that when we go forth to follow the calling of the Lord in faith and love, we do have an enemy who hates us for doing so. Remember that "our struggle is not with flesh and blood but against...spiritual forces of wickedness in high places (Eph 6:12). So take up the full armor of God and stand firm.
Love for both of you in Christ
Joan
